On the Frontlines of the Overdose Crisis: An Update
Come to the March 8 Vancouver All-Staff Forum at VGH or tune in via webcast
At our June 2016 All-Staff Forum (ASF), Dr. Patricia Daly, VCH Chief Medical Health Officer, gave a keynote about the overdose crisis following the provincial declaration of a public health emergency.
Please join us at our upcoming March 8 ASF (noon to 1:00 p.m.) where Dr Daly will present an update on the current state of the overdose crisis, what initiatives we have implemented in response, as well as a look at where we’re heading. Several initiatives have been put in place to support people with substance use issues, including overdose prevention sites, the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU), quick start options for treatment, and specialized women’s services.
“We have more facilities here in Vancouver to respond with than in other communities, but we need to expand services here as well as across the province,” says Dr. Daly. “I don’t think we’re going to turn this around until we get everybody off illicit drugs and onto a legal substitute. A good first step has been the provincial government’s commitment to provide more funding for suboxone.”
In addition, a panel discussion will be led by Miranda Compton, VCH Regional Director for Prevention.
Panelists include:
- Dr. Mark Lysyshyn, Medical Health Officer
- Lori Korchinsky, Patient Services Manager, VGH Emergency
- Dr. Rolando Barrios, Senior Medical Director, Vancouver Community
- Dr. Eric Grafstein, ED Physician and MMU medical lead
- Dr. Ron Joe, Associate Medical Director, Substance Use Services
- Monika Stein, Manager, DTES Connections
There will also be time for questions and answers, so please join us for this very special Forum!
The ASF will be held at VGH’s Paetzold Auditorium, but staff and physicians can also attend one of several facilitated sites or watch from a workstation.
Please register here through CCRS to attend in-person or via webcast.
