“Michelle was an angel for us”
In our role as health care providers, we often support patients and their families during times of significant stress and strain. For one family, care on the VGH Burns, Trauma and High Acuity Unit meant more than attending to medical complications. Compassionate, quality care also meant providing comfort so that both the patient and his partner could regain calm and get to sleep. They share their sincere thanks below.
“I am writing on behalf of my partner and myself. We wish to commend nurse Michelle Uzelac of the of the Burns, Trauma and [Acute Care] unit on the second floor of VGH. Michelle came to the Transplant unit to take my partner to this special area during our visit. Michelle was an ‘angel’ for us. From the moment we met her, we knew she would help my partner through a trying time when some complications began a couple of days after his transplant. She cared for him, watched over him, permitting me to get some much needed sleep. She even held his hand during the night, when he was afraid, to help him regain calm and inner peace. This nurse is the best nurse we have encountered in our many hospital stays. We commend her to you and hope that you will join us in celebrating her empathy and talent. Thank you nurse Michelle for looking after my partner. Caring and compassion are hallmarks of who you are as a healthcare professional.”

Michelle, you are to be commended! You are truly aware of what nursing is and are practising the “therapeutic use of self” so well. Who you are has contributed a great deal to how you nurse. It is a precious skill that will serve you and your patients throughout your career!
