The newly renovated atrium at Richmond Hospital.

Atrium renovations unveiled

Transformational renovations to revitalize Richmond Hospital were unveiled on Friday at a special event that also saw the Richmond Hospital Foundation officially name the Milan Ilich Pavilion and launch its Community Cares Month fundraising drive to improve care at Richmond Hospital.

“These renovations will revitalize Richmond Hospital to offer a more caring and comfortable environment for Richmond’s growing number of families and seniors cared for in the hospital,” said Dermot Kelly, Interim Chief Operating Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health- Richmond. “On behalf of all the patients and families who benefit from their donations, we thank the Milan & Maureen Ilich Foundation for their generosity and the example they set for us all to help improve care,”

The renovations include:

  • A beautifully redesigned atrium with new comfortable furniture
  • A new vestibule at the main entrance to guard against inclement weather
  • Relocating the Admitting area to next to Starbucks
  • A new Patient & Family Resource Centre
  • A new Spiritual Sanctuary or Room for Reflection where people of many faiths will have a place to worship or reflect during what is often a very stressful time in their lives.
  • A new Quiet Room for those private family meetings that are often required when a family is facing a health care challenge.

Another major component of the project was the introduction of a new way-finding system with four colour-coded zones and locally inspired icons to help visitors navigate the hospital more easily. Our new wayfinding system also reflects the community of Richmond, drawing inspiration for the icons and colours from Richmond’s rich history, nature and diverse cultures.

Construction began in April on the $2-million-plus project, which was almost entirely donor-funded and was completed this week.

For more than 25 years, Richmond Hospital Foundation has raised more than $55 million to help purchase vital medical equipment, improve patient care services and upgrade facilities at Richmond Hospital.
