On the receiving end of care
I’m not sure who the managers are of Emergency Department and 2South these days so please pass this on to them. I want to compliment their teams and ultimately, your teams!
I spent the last few days in ER and 2S. I want to share some of my observations being on the receiving end of care this time, which are as follows:
1) excellent communication among the team members especially the nursing team. They knew what was going on – ie it was evident that they read notes/charting prior to coming to me. Handover was good and when they went on breaks they informed me. They asked whether or not I was in pain, and when given pain meds, evaluated the effectiveness by again asking, “how is your pain?”
My nurses actually used the white board in the room documenting the information I needed! Wow! They were not simply part of the wall! 😉
2) Collaboration – when the nurses were on break, the covering nurse continued to do whatever needed to be done eg discontinuing my IV med. and flushing, etc. It appeared that people genuinely helped each other out.
3) Respectful and professional attitude – every nurse introduced himself/herself and greeted me with respect. They explained what they were doing or about to do. When they said they would come back, they did. They listened to me!
4) excellent practice – practice up to standard, no short cuts done even on simple procedures. Assessment skills are good; follow up great.
Of note the MDs were also great – I was assigned to Dr. Chee, hospitalist, who ensured I was fine every day I was there, and my questions answered. Every one was quick to “get on top of things” – Dr. Chee, Dr. Wong, Dr J Wilson.
The porters, phlebotomist, and technicians were great too! Thanks to Karinna, Marvin (ER), Grace, Lorelei, Heidi, Ann (2S) who were my nurses specifically.
You both know my strong perspective on professional practice hence I offer you kudos. You are on a great track with quality care. They are not simply words as I “felt” it – in action! Keep up the great work. It is reassuring to know that my community hospital provides excellent care.
