Drug diversion and what to do about it
Drug diversion is the inappropriate access and use of narcotics or other medications by health care providers, patients, visitors or family members. Drug diversion is risky and can result in harm or death.
How drug diversion happens
Drug diversion happens when a family member, visitor, staff member, or even another patient gains access to full or partial doses of a drug meant for a patient or a drug intended for waste. Diverted drugs may be used by the ‘diverter’ or possibly sold.
What to do
If you suspect drug diversion by an employee, patient or family member:
- Report it to your manager
- Report it to the MRP (most responsible physician)
- Report it to Integrated Protection Services (in urgent situations)
