Meet Mary Ackenhusen

Title:

President and CEO.

How long have you worked at VCH?

I joined VCH in 2007, after eight years with Fraser Health.

Tell us what you do at VCH in one or two sentences.

I guess in the end, I’m ultimately accountable for whether VCH succeeds in achieving its goals – I’m just getting used to this idea.

What’s your favourite thing about your work?

The opportunity to improve things – I see huge opportunities and I find it so satisfying to pursue them and make a noticeable difference that makes life better for staff, physicians and patients.

How does your work contribute to the VCH True North goals?

It’s my job to focus on how we create and maintain the best workforce, because this is the only way we can deliver excellent care.  Each of us needs to feel we have what we need, both physically and emotionally, to do our best work every day.

One thing that we might be surprised to find out about you:

I love country music and everything that goes with it –  horses, pickup trucks and a simpler way of life.

Three things you always have in your fridge:

There are two you’re guaranteed to find: milk (for coffee) and white wine (to relax). I’ve always wondered if I had to give up coffee or wine, which would I choose?

What makes you happy?

Very cliché but, my family, including my husband of 30 years and two wonderful adult children who are the best!

Most healthy habit:

I always make sure I get enough sleep – I hate being tired.

Favourite vacation spot or place you’ve visited:

Always France! I lived there for nine years before coming to Canada and it totally rejuvenates me when I spend time there. I love how the French value food, family and culture.
