VCH staff publish in national journals

Through our strong partnership with UBC researcher Dr. Bill Miller, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, two groups of VCH clinicians have accomplished a significant feat – publication in a national journal! We are all aware of excellent work happening at VCH and the many innovative programs and practices underway. However, few of us dedicate the time and energy to formally study this work and then have the perseverance to follow it through to publication. Our thanks goes out to these clinicians for their efforts and for showcasing the great work happening at VCH.

Denise Kendrick (Occupational Therapist, VGH), Noah Silverberg (Psychologist, GF Strong) and Susan Barlow (Occupational Therapist, GF Strong) studied the effectiveness of the ABI Self-Management Program at GF Strong, and found that it may improve daily functioning in individuals with chronic mild ABI symptoms. Kendrick, D., Silverberg, N., Barlow, S., Miller, W.C., Moffat, J., (2012). Acquired brain injury self-management programme: A pilot study. Brain Injury, 26(10), 1243-1249.

Linda Boronowski (Occupational Therapy Practice Coordinator, GF Strong) and Cara Shorter (Occupational Therapy Practice Coordinator, Coastal) found that the Occupational Therapy Discharge Needs Screen, used to identify clients with more complex needs, has the potential to make the discharge-planning process more efficient and improve continuity of care, thereby enhancing best practice.
