Kudos and kind words for VCH staff

writingOver the past couple of weeks, we have received a number of letters from patients, thanking VCH for excellent care.

Husband still thankful

I would like to send a particular compliment to a home care nurse who looked after my wife several years ago when she was suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. Sadly my wife passed away in 2000. The nurses name was Susan. She would visit our home in West Vancouver, British Columbia in the late 1990’s and gave Marcia incredible care. She was an angel. I know this is late to say thank you, but I want to say how much I appreciated her kindness in a very difficult time.

A sister is thankful for VGH staff during difficult time

I would like to personally thank Dr. (Hussein) Kanji, Derrick (Richards, nurse) and Dr. (Rod) March for helping all of us during this difficult time. I appreciated the explanations and care for my brother and concern for all of us there. Nurse Derrick helped make it so much easier.

He was taken to Vancouver General Hospital in neuro surgery.  He died of a massive brain hemorrhage.

We have said our final goodbyes and hope the donor recipients have a healthier life.

Two technicians “made all of difference” for one patient

I had a CT scan on my neck in February, downstairs in the Jimmy Pattison Pavilion. The doctor who referred me is Dr. Heather Jenkins.  I’ve never had a CT scan before so I was feeling anxious and unsure about the whole procedure which included an IV. The 2 technicians (Catherine Doll and Ray Blanca) on duty, a young man and woman were just wonderful. They were helpful, informative, efficient and kind. They made all the difference in my experience and I wanted to recognize their service. I wish I knew their names however I hope I have given you enough information to determine who they were so that this can be passed on to their manager firstly and then to them individually.  I hope they are recognized and I hope my comments encourage them to continue their excellent service.

Patient remembers “truly caring nature” of VCH nurses

Attention: Ms. Heather Speirs, Nurse Manager, Recovery; and

Ms. Cindy Hartley, Nurse Manager, Labour and Delivery

Dear Ms. Speirs and Ms. Hartley,

I would like you to know that I am both very grateful and extremely impressed with the excellent care I received before, during and after my hysterectomy at Lionsgate Hospital around the middle of January.

Your nursing staff is truly caring and goes the extra mile. From the pre-operative nurse, who took the time to answer all my questions by explaining in great detail all the variables affecting the time of my arrival to my hospital room, to the nurse who, as I was about to go under the anesthetic, told me she had heard that if you think of a favourite activity or thing just before going under, you may wake up in a positive mood that may help healing. For past surgeries in other hospitals, I only ever received a very business-like instruction to count backwards.

Although my memory is fuzzy of my time spent in the recovery room, I do remember feeling very well taken care of. The nurses were all so attentive and caring and this level of care carried on throughout my overnight stay on the maternity ward. The morning after my surgery, there was a nurse who was present when my surgeon, Dr. Kaye, asked me to call his office for a follow-up visit. She took the trouble to tell me she would seek out one of Dr. Kaye’s business cards for me, which she did. I guess she wanted to make sure I had his number to make that call. How thoughtful of her!

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the truly caring nature of all the nurses I encountered during my stay. I have had three past hospital stays: 2 ½ weeks at Lakeshore General Hospital, Pte. Claire, Que.; an overnight at Lachine General, Lachine, Que.; and a 5-day stay at Ottawa Civic Hospital. I have never had as comfortable and pleasant a stay as the one I spent at Lionsgate hospital.

I thought you should all know just how good you are. Thank you very much for all your great care.

Your appreciative patient.

Flight nurse appreciates the support from VCH staff

I wanted to relay my appreciation for the support that was provided by your medical staff on Wednesday February 13th at approximately 0400. I phoned the VGH emergency department requesting assistance in the management of an unstable patient that I was preparing for transport from Whitehorse to VGH. Initially I was put through to a helpful ER resident who wasn’t familiar with me or the patient but took the time to make a few suggestions after hearing some of the management issues. This resident then phoned me back a few minutes later suggesting that I should speak to an ICU resident, which she arranged through BC bedline. The ICU resident was courteous and helpful but felt that perhaps I would be better served speaking with a staff ICU physician. In a short time I was speaking with Dr. (Bill) Henderson  who was very informative, and made some very helpful suggestions, which greatly assisted us in the transportation of this very ill patient from Whitehorse.

My thanks to all three of these physicians who were willing to take the time to share their expertise and help us care for this patient.
