Sticks & Scones: A modern day story of bullying and redemption

“I believe Sticks & Scones allows for a greater understanding of the reasons behind bullying. It also shows the control it has on the bully and those who are connected to him.” — Alishah Virji, Youth Writer/Performer

For the 12th year in a row, VCH  is supporting this year’s production by the Roundhouse Youth Theatre Action (RHYTAG) group, Sticks & Scones, with public performances on May 3 and May 4. The production is a collaboration between young people from Vancouver and theatre professionals.

Since 2002 the award-winning RYTAG has been engaging youth and audiences through insightful performances that inspire awareness and discussion of youth issues and ideas.

Untitled-1The story

Sticks & Scones follows the journey of Teddy, a teenager who disappears for a year after being traumatized from being bullied. He resurfaces at a new school and, regardless of the consequences, attempts to avoid becoming the target again…. and the results ripple throughout the community. With humour and hope, Sticks & Scones humanizes bullies, bystanders and those who are targeted.  It also looks at the issue of cyberbullying, and the false sense that the bully may feel no responsibility for his/her actions through online anonymity. Mental health and addictions staff will be present to provide audience support during the performance and talkback session following the show.

The idea

The show provides a way for young people to get involved and have a critical and empowering voice in increasing the understanding of these issues within their community.

VCH has provided funding for the play as part of its support of peer based and prevention strategies to reduce mental health conditions and health problems associated with addiction. Other funding and support is provided by Some Assembly Arts Society, Roundhouse Community Centre, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Watari, Vancouver Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, British Columbia Arts Council,  VSB, and Methotical Productions.

Once again, the performance will be facilitated by professional artists Valerie Methot (director/writer), Ken Lawson (performer/youth support worker), designers Chandra Lesmeister and Jeremy Baxter, and will include the talent of various young performers.

Past RYTAG productions include death and scrambled eggs, express, Mirror, Mirror, Face Value, and tic talk, Keep the Change and Cleverly Painted Rocks.
