Faster results help community-based clinicians improve patient care

Physicians, nurse practitioners, mid-wives, and other community-based clinicians need fast, accurate lab, medical imaging, and transcribed reports to provide the best possible care for their patients. To this end, the four Lower Mainland health organizations have banded together on a project that will see all reports and results come from a single distribution point, improving quality, service, and efficiency while protecting patient confidentiality.

After a rigorous public procurement, Excelleris was chosen as the single point of distribution for reports and results to community-based providers. Reports will be transitioning to Excelleris over the course of the next 12 – 18 months.

First up: transcribed reports (consultations, operative reports, discharge summaries, and progress notes) from specific VCH sites—VGH, UBCH, RH, GF Strong, and the George Pearson Centre—beginning on May 8, 2013. This coincides with Health Information Management’s first deployment of their new transcription system. Shortly thereafter, anatomic pathology lab reports from BCCA, BC Women’s, and BC Children’s will be added to this list.

Today, reports and results are sent to community-based providers from many different sources. A centralized distribution point allows us to set specific delivery standards and provides an audit trail to ensure the right results get to the right provider.

In addition, Excelleris will help us increase the number of reports sent electronically, feeding patient electronic medical records and supporting the goal of interoperability between clinical systems in the region. It’ll also help us reduce paper use in the health care system.
