Aboriginal health priorities set for next six months

An important milestone has been reached through the Vancouver Coastal Partnership Accord in the establishing of these five strategic priorities for the next six months:

  1. Urban Aboriginal Health Strategic Plan
  2. Regional Health and Wellness Plan
  3. Central Coast Community Engagement
  4. Research and Information Management – Developing a framework that would look at first steps in the data management, self-identification, surveillance.
  5. Regional Mental Health – Look at developing a Vancouver Coastal Aboriginal Mental Health Plan in conjunction with the BC First Nations and Aboriginal People’s Mental Wellness and Substance Use Plan.  The plan would look at a continuum of mental health care.

It was noted that the social determinants would be part of the Regional Health and Wellness Plan.

The priorities are a result of the last meeting of the Vancouver Coastal Aboriginal Health Steering Committee (AHSC), which is comprised of representatives from Vancouver Coastal Health, the First Nations Health Authority and the Vancouver Coastal Caucus Representatives.

The next AHSC meeting will take place in September 2013 at the FNHA offices.
