“Right now, I ‘m in Amsterdam, so I am totally hyped about biking, as absolutely everybody here from nine to ninety appears to be active, superb cyclists.

I’ve been a bike commuter for about 25 years now. I encourage people to: Just try it! I know you’ll find it much easier than you imagined”. I bike in my work clothes, just adding waterproof stuff as needed. The trick is to remember that it’s travel, not sport. I hardly ever go faster than 20 kph, and almost never arrive in a sweat. Once you get the taste for it, you’ll never stop. Fun, cheap, convenient, and fast; what could be better?’

FHA: Dr Paul Van Buynder. Vice President Public Health for FHA.

“I take transit to work every day and enjoy combining this with some cycling on dry days.”

“I work at the BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver clinic and have a 7km daily commute.

Like many, I started cycling to work when I could not afford to run a car and pay for parking. I soon discovered that not only did I save money, but also that I increasingly enjoyed the ride as a means of unwinding after a long day. 25 years later, I would say my daily commute is the highlight of my day. Apart from the health benefits to me (and the mental benefits affect all those I interact with), I know that I am doing “my bit” to cut down on pollution, and am indirectly helping to reverse the car dependency culture that we live in ”

I would like to see more people look at their commute and work out whether they can leave their car at home and take alternative options, even once or twice a week.

There are many benefits of riding a bike to work & many, not just on the environment but on our physical health and the health of our communities.
