Clean Commuter Challenge: Week 2!

We are half way through the Clean Commuter Challenge & we are inspired by all that are taking part. During our first week, which featured quite a bit of rain, over 500 people registered, with 50 teams competing.

Week 2 has been beautiful and sunny, meaning that more people are on their bikes. It’s been great to hear lots of positive feedback from our Clean Commuters. Visit BCGreenCare.ca for stories about those taking part.

Kudos

Kudos to all that have joined this Challenge! We have some impressive individuals & teams participating in this year’s Commuter Challenge.

For VCH: Check-out the Spinning Falcons!

1. Who’s the team?

VGH Administration, a motley crew of Admin Asstistants (3), Directors (2), Financial Managers (2), and an Analyst (1).

2. Why did you all sign-up for the Commuter Challenge last year and then again this year?

We signed up last year, mainly as a way to do something fun and see if we could change our habits and get ourselves to stop driving (one person drove last year).  We signed-up again this year as it was so fun last year, and since we won some MEC Gift Cards last year, we wanted to do it again to have another go and have fun as a team!

3. What do you hope to achieve / or how has the Challenge helped you clean your commutes? spinning-falcons-2013

We hope to make people more aware by wearing our t-shirts* around and engaging in discussion about how other people can change their commutes.

*The Spinning Falcon t-shirts were specially designed and made for the team. Meilan Robson’s daughter designed the image of the falcon as the team emblem.

4. Any words of encouragement for other health authority employees? Why is this important?

Just like trying to change any habit, being involved in a team, we can urge and give support to each other and help individuals create realistic goals, which they can achieve over the three week Challenge. We encourage everyone to get involved, try something new and have fun!

Since last year, some of our team members have moved on and they are sad that they cannot participate.  Next year, since we are really nine people, we may have to draw straws and have two admin teams, since we could probably get some others to participate. This year, we have our own t-shirt, next year, we’ll have to be even more ambitious!

How does it work?

The Clean Commuter Challenge is an online calculator tool and campaign that allows health authority employees to calculate the carbon emissions related to their commute using an interactive, web-based platform.

So far we have 500 participants and 50 teams!

With teams signing-up across the Lower Mainland, people are changing their commutes (and getting a little fitter!) alongside health care employees in Squamish, Langley and across the Lower Mainland. Teams include the Bicycle Kick Boys, Perinatal Pedals, The Nerve and Super Heroes In Training!
