Do you feel safe at work?

military-humor-funny-joke-air-force-bomb-safety-at-workIt’s one of the questions on the 2013 People First Survey, which began earlier this month. But what does safety look like for those working in non-clinical areas?

What does safety look like for you?

In healthcare, we mostly talk about patient safety in the context of patient care, but it’s actually much broader. Here are some things we can all consider in answering this important question:

  • I sometimes work alone or in isolation
  • My office has been broken into
  • There is a hand sanitizer dipenser on my floor
  • I don’t know how to set up my work station properly
  • I have come across an agitated person and wasn’t sure what to do
  • My office just held a drill for an emergency event
  • I don’t know what VCH’s policy is on scented products
  • I’ve wondered why hand hygiene’s so important because I don’t provide care for patients
  • I’ve lifted something heavy at work and regretted it later
  • I’m not sure if my office has an emergency plan in case of a disaster
  • I need to swipe a card to get into my office
  • I don’t know how to report a concern with air quality

Whether you’re on the front lines or away from the patients and in an office, safety is an important issue for all of us.

And additionally, feeling safer in your workplace is connected to you feeling engaged at work.
