Join team VCH for the Walk for Reconciliation: Sept. 22

VCH staff, physicians and volunteers are invited to join the VCH team for the 4k Walk for Reconciliation, Sunday September 22 in Vancouver. The walk is part of Reconciliation Week activities being held in Vancouver Sept. 16 through Sept. 22, including a sacred fire at Ambleside Beach, a canoe paddle from Kits Point to Olympic Village.

About the walk

The Walk for Reconciliation is designed to transform and renew the very essence of relationships among Aboriginal peoples and all Canadians. It sounds so simple, but just the act of gathering and walking and sharing our stories can join us all in a shared commitment to creating a new way forward in our relationships with each other.*

The link to health

The impacts of the European colonization of Canada and the residential school system on Aboriginal people in British Columbia continue today. The damage to Aboriginal families, communities and culture has resulted in serious health inequities among Aboriginal populations. One of the goals of VCH is to address these health inequities and work with First Nations communities to improve the health of Aboriginal populations. One key initiative at VCH is the training of health providers in culturally competent care.

How to participate

Participation is free. Join the VCH Walk Team by going to the Reconciliation Canada website and searching for Vancouver Coastal Health. You will be prompted about whether you would like to make a donation or purchase a T-shirt, but these are not required. The team captain will be in touch with via email with any follow up details about walk day.
