2013 People First Survey organization-wide results

As we continue to work collaboratively to improve the quality of work life at VCH by responding to your opinions and feedback, we feel that it is also important to be transparent with the People First Survey (Gallup) results across the organization.

This new direction of sharing the survey results across the organization:

  • Aligns with our VCH True North goals of “developing the best workforce;”
  • Reinforces the importance of the work you have done in using the results to action-plan and create quality work environments;
  • Demonstrates that the survey results belong to all of us.

Freedom of Information (FOI) request

The survey results were requested under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) which legislates how public bodies (including VCH) must collect, store and disclose information. Under FIPPA guidelines, VCH released the information to the FOI applicant on March 26. FIPPA stipulates that VCH is not permitted to disclose who the FOI applicant is.

2013 survey results posted on VCH intranet

Please note that there are two versions of the organization-wide survey results; the data sent to the FOI applicant who requested the information be released and a user friendly version for VCH staff.

Overview of VCH’s guiding principles:

  • VCH values the opinions staff provided in the survey and because we take the survey results seriously, all departments are participating in action planning.
  • The primary purpose of the local level results is for teams, including the leader, to understand and take ownership of their engagement and collectively improve.
  • Gallup states, The survey results are not meant to be used to measure the effectiveness of a manager in doing his/her job. A team’s engagement can be impacted by many factors, some within the team’s control, but others outside of the team’s control” (official statement from Gallup, 2014). This includes long standing historical or resource issues.
  • To identify and address some of these long standing historical or resource issues, VCH is focusing additional supports on 26 of the units which scored lowest on engagement and safety. Examples of the issues we have uncovered include high turnover and vacancy rates linked to disrespectful workplace climate, lack of role clarity, and unresolved change management issues, etc.

Thank you for continuing to work within your teams to make the most of the survey results.
