Register for the Clean Commuter & Wellness Challenge today!

The Clean Commuter & Wellness Challenge was created and designed for the Lower Mainland Health Organizations by the Pembina Institute in 2011. The challenge is for all health care staff from FH, VCH, PHSA and PHC and runs from May 25th – June 14th. We decided to start it the same week as Bike to Work Week, so if you are a cyclist, you can enter both for double the fun and chance for prizes!

The Clean Commuter & Wellness Challenge is a free and fun online tool and campaign that allows health care employees to calculate the carbon emissions related to their commute using an interactive, web-based platform.

You can enter the challenge as an individual or in teams! There are celebrations, shout-outs and PRIZES for participating, competing and completing the 3-week challenge!

Now in its 5th year, we have added a wellness component, which allows health care staff to get fit and calculate the benefits of an active commute to and from work.

Let’s get started!

Whether you live five blocks or five stations away, everyone commutes to work. Now you can make your journey a little greener, create a fun team, burn some calories and win great prizes in the process!

How does it work?

The challenge is for people that already have a clean and active commute, as well as those that want to change their commute & try something new. We have prizes and recognition for both categories. Plus a new category specifically for active commuters!

If you already walk, cycle, use transit, or carpool to get to work, we categorize you as ‘Avoiders‘ – meaning that you avoid carbon emissions & reduce pollution. If you want to try and make your commute more clean or active (even one or two times a week), we categorize you as a ‘Reducer‘ – meaning that your baseline (regular commute) will change to a cleaner / more active commute over the 3-week challenge. The third category is for those people that make their commute a workout! We measure this in calories burned & call it the ‘Top Self-Propeller‘ category.

The Clean Commuter & Wellness is a lot of fun!

A few highlights from last year:

  • The ‘Too Cool for Cars (TC4C)’ team issued a challenge to everyone else in their office to see who could coordinate the cleanest commute.
  • ‘Gang Green’ – a community based mental health team in Richmond went above and beyond as they competed in the Reducer category.
  • ‘The Clean Mile’ – a team of ‘Avoiders’ who already had clean and active commutes, joined the challenge as they like initiatives that bring people together in pursuit of good health. More here.
