Gloves should be removed immediately upon exiting the patient environment. Gloves should never be worn anywhere in the nursing station.

This is something the audit team sees all too often – staff come out of a patient room half way through care because they need a towel or sheet from the linen cart (and never the top one for some odd reason) – gloves should be removed immediately upon exiting the patients environment, hands cleaned, then proceed to the linen cart and/or supply room to get what you need.

Wearing gloves while removing a dirty bedpan is correct! (our trick question)

Are your hands clean upon exiting a patient room still wearing gloves? Probably not, so rubbing your eye and/or adjusting your glasses, etc. is never a good idea. Gloves should be removed immediately upon exiting the patient environment and your hands should be cleaned right away.

Staff should never have a “pocket full of gloves” this is very wasteful – as soon as you remove the gloves from the box and place them in your pocket they are dirty/contaminated.

-
Examination gloves are single use and should never be cleaned with sanitizer. Remove your gloves and clean your hands. Also remember it is important that you clean your hands before putting on gloves.
