Great patient care starts with one simple question

It was an idea that started in Norway in 2014. Health care providers could start meaningful conversations with patients by asking one simple question: “What matters to you?” By doing so, it would help them build trust, develop empathy, and understand their patients. You and your colleagues may already be doing this every day.

“What Matters to You?” Day

On June 6, we’re encouraging you to take the time to ask what matters, listen to what matters, and do what matters. Taking part is easy. First step?  You can sign up to show your commitment to patient-centred care.

How do you start the conversation with patients?

The question “What matters to you?” can be asked in many different ways. For example:

  • “What are the things that are important to you at the moment?”
  • “What are some of the things you would like to achieve as a result of our work together?”
  • “What can I do to best support you in your care today?”
  • “Is there anything else you want to tell me that I haven’t asked you about?”
  • “What are your goals and wishes today and how can I help you achieve them?”

You can learn more on the BC Patient Safety and Quality Council website, including tips on reflecting on patient relationships and tips for listening to answers.
