BC Chronic Disease dashboard now live on BCCDC website

The BC Observatory for Population and Public Health (Observatory) has launched the BC Chronic Disease dashboard, which is publicly available on the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) website. The dashboard is the result of a close partnership between the Observatory, BCCDC, and Office of the Provincial Health Officer.

About the dashboard

The dashboard is an interactive tool that provides summary statistics on a variety of non-communicable diseases and conditions in BC. Specifically, it presents time trends (between 2000/01 and 2014/15) and geographical variations at the Health Service Delivery Area (HSDA) level of overall and sex-specific prevalence and incidence measures for 32 chronic conditions and their sub-types.

Incidence and prevalence were calculated according to algorithms validated by the Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System or other jurisdictions using administrative databases of the BC Ministry of Health. The dashboard will be updated on an annual basis, with the next iteration to be released in early 2018, including 2015/16 data.

Why the dashboard was created

One of the observatory’s key functions is translating, disseminating and sharing knowledge and information. This dashboard is its first public-facing product that makes chronic disease surveillance statistics more accessible to public health professionals, local government partners, academics, and the general public.

It is our hope that surveillance information produced by the observatory and its partners will be helpful for policy development, actionable program planning, and decision-making to enable the growth of vibrant and healthy BC communities.
