Dear EFAP: paying the price

Thank you to those who have written to “Dear EFAP” for input on your dilemmas. As you are aware, we read every inquiry that comes in but we are only able to print a small selection of responses.  Our “pithy” answers are modeled after the lighter hearted Dear Abby style and are grounded in common sense.  If your issues require a more personalized level of support please call EFAP/Employee Wellness (1-800-505-4929) and we can confidentially book you a counselling appointment with a senior level therapist.

We welcome all inquiries – please submit these to dear.efap@efap.ca. All printed responses use the anonymous descriptor that you sign your inquiry with and do not reveal any identifying information.  Our goal is to support you through insight and common sense.

Below is our response to the next selection – enjoy!

Dear EFAP

I ate and drank way too much at Christmas and now I am paying the price. My liver feels like it is on overdrive trying to clear my system and all my clothes are too tight. I am totally psyched to do whatever it is to make change. The problem is I am not sure what to do. Can you help me?

– Paying the Price

Dear Paying the Price

I am not a dietitian nor am I a family doctor, my friend, and they are the folks that would be very helpful here.  I can say from the psychological side of the house, it does sound like you are motivated for change and these professions can help you look at a plan that is right for you.

The key is to give yourself time to actually make an appointment, and go and learn how you can self-correct this overindulged holiday meal and libation extravaganza. Employee Wellness might also be able to assist and they  have health coaches that could work with you. Self-care is really important. It’s great that you are on it. It sets you up so well for the coming year. Happy new year, my friend!
