North Shore Health Care Awards winners celebrated in style

VCH staff and physicians from across the North Shore packed the Lions Gate Hospital gymnasium to see their colleagues honoured at today’s 7th Annual LGH Foundation North Shore Health Care Awards for Outstanding Achievement. They didn’t go away disappointed as each of the 44 people nominated were saluted for their efforts and a celebratory mood made the event an uplifting one.

The recipients of this year’s awards are:

Leadership — David Hall, Respiratory Therapist

David’s expertise as a Respiratory Therapist is unparalleled and for the past 20 years he has been a tremendous resource for LGH staff, both senior and junior. David is our RT educator, our key respiratory contact for other Coastal sites and an invaluable member of our ICU team. He has represented LGH as a guest speaker at respiratory conferences and perhaps most importantly, he always considers the well-being of his patients. So much so, that he accompanied a patient back to Bella Bella to ensure the best care.

Clinical Practice — Dr. Arvind Kang, Psychiatrist

Thanks to Dr. Kang, the North Shore is a better place for patients with dementia and their families. Dr. Kang was instrumental in developing two special care units at Kiwanis Care Centre and through the introduction of weekly rounds, new patient programs and renovations has dramatically improved the care of patients with dementia on 4 West. She is patient, caring, respectful and diligent in making herself and her knowledge available to both patients and colleagues alike.

Workplace Inspiration — Renee Long, Nursing Unit Assistant

Always calm, always professional, even when facing a myriad of admissions and discharges, Renee’s positive energy and personality are infectious. A proven multi-tasker, she is just as likely to be seen carrying out physician’s orders and nursing instructions as she is talking to patients, playing music for them or providing them with magazines. Renee is more than a unit clerk for the ward, she’s considered an extension of the nursing team and an inspiration for staff on 6 West.

Spirit of Philanthropy Award — Dr. Philip Cohen & Michelle Stanton, Surgery Manager

This year we have two deserving recipients:

1. Dr. Philip Cohen — The Foundation’s most recent campaign was to raise $1.5M to purchase 2 new gamma cameras for Nuclear Medicine. We did this in record time in large part because Dr. Phil Cohen, head of the department, agreed to match – dollar for dollar, every donation we received to the campaign until we reached our goal.

2. Michelle Stanton, Surgery Manager

Michelle has gone out of her way to tour donors through her department, volunteer her time as both a speaker and a volunteer at Foundation events for several years, and a willing participant in our videos and other promotional materials. Michelle has been a donor to the Foundation since 2001 and part of the employee giving program since 2011.
