Now that mattresses, beds, mobility aids and commodes have been added to the equipment stored in the Medical Equipment Cleaning Depot, the system is now having an even bigger effect on improving access to equipment for staff, reducing hallway clutter on LGH units and contributing to the reduction of healthcare associated infections (HAIs).

LGH “gains ground” with medical equipment program

Tucked away in a small corner of LGH, the Medical Equipment Cleaning & Distribution Depot (MECD) is growing its stock of equipment and increasing the benefits it brings to clinical staff, physicians and patients.

The MECD is managed on-site by Aramark Healthcare and focuses on detailed cleaning and storage of biomed fleet equipment to improve infection control practices as well as reduce clutter on LGH wards. Aramark staff ensure safe handling of reusable medical equipment and staff, identifying and separating clean and dirty items. This work allows clinical staff and physicians to reinvest time in direct patient care and improves the operational flow in acute departments.

Marilyn Bulahaw is the point person for the MECD, helping declutter units and ensuring the equipment is cleaned appropriately.

With the recent addition of mattresses, beds, mobility aids and commodes, the MECD is now paying bigger dividends. Beyond improved access to equipment, reduced hallway clutter and a safer environment for all on our units, the program is also contributing to the reduction of healthcare associated infections (HAIs).
