Infusion pump training in focus for Coastal Accreditation 2015
Infusion pumps are an essential part of care for many different patients, making expert operation of them a key skill, one that needs regular maintenance, particularly as pump types change or are updated.
It’s also an Accreditation Canada ROP (Required Organizational Practice), one of the many that surveyors will be asking patient care staff about when Coastal goes through the Qmentum surveying process this coming June 22 – 26, 2015.
“Across Coastal, we think we do a good job of ensuring our 850 or so RNs and LPNs are trained in the different pumps,” says MaryAnn Taylor, Practice Initiatives Lead. “What we need to focus on is making sure we document this training in a consistent way.”
Coastal nursing staff needing infusion pump training are able to get it in a variety of ways including:
Online – nurses are required to complete an online education module related to the specific infusion pump(s) they will be working with
In-person – educators can provide ‘just in time’ education or peer-to-peer checklists can be used to ensure competency. Also in-person training is offered either monthly or biyearly for new nurses or nurses who need a renewal.
Keeping track of the work done
A key part of the process, is tracking those who have done the training and who may be coming up on a deadline to renew. The unit manager and/or educator will track your completed infusion pump training either online (if you have completed a course on CCRS) or by documenting it manually when you have attended or completed training.
