Unique patient presentation highlights trip to Central Coast

He’d heard that providing health care in the Central Coast could bring unique situations some days but, until Dr. Dean Brown was part of a team last week helping care for a logger who had been mauled by a grizzly bear, he wasn’t really aware of how different it could actually be.

As part of a three-day locum in Bella Bella’s RW Large Memorial Hospital Dr. Brown, the Division Head for the North Share Division of Family Practice, was, “Amazed by how the team came together given they don’t see these issues on a regular basis.”

“The critical stage of treatment is often the first hour or two after a serious medical occurrence – the “golden hour” – this took place in Bella Bella and was done very well before the patient was transferred out.”

After the critical stage of the care process, Dr. Brown acknowledged how impressed he was with, “..the amount of physical resources in place in Bella Bella to assist in dealing with a tough situation and I’m confident that the team is capable of handling high pressure situations that don’t by very often in small communities.”

Opportunities to experience the uniqueness of the Central Coast and be a relief member of the great Central Coast team are now available to staff and physicians across VCH and will be the subject of a slide show and first-ever Relief Recruitment Meet & Greet for Bella Bella physician and nursing positions that’s being held:
