‘Sustainable City Award’ presented to VCH’s HOpe Centre

Vancouver Coastal Health has received the City of North Vancouver’s Sustainable City Award in recognition of its innovative leadership in designing and developing the HOpe Centre.

About the HOpe Centre

The Greta and Robert H.N. Ho Centre for Psychiatry and Education – the HOpe Centre – is a state of the art mental health and addictions services building, located on the Lions Gate Hospital campus. When designing the centre, VCH used an integrated approach to sustainability, incorporating economic, social and environmental priorities in the design and construction, to the benefit of clients, patients, staff and the broader community.

Sustainable designs

The HOpe Centre is a LEED Gold certified building, making it more resource efficient, by using less water and energy and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. The HOpe Centre is also connected to the City of North Vancouver’s district energy utility, the Lonsdale Energy Corporation – a district energy system that provides clean energy to residential and commercial buildings in the Lonsdale area. In addition, the HOpe Centre has been recognized for its use of natural materials in design, including natural wood.

Healthy people, healthy planet

Healthcare facilities serve their local communities in a variety of ways. By taking a leadership role to recognize that “healthy people need a healthy planet,”  VCH has been recognized for its role in the transformation to more sustainable communities and a healthier planet.
