Richmond Lions Manor moving to new location

Architect’s rendering of the new, interim Richmond Lions Manor

I am pleased to announce that we are moving forward with plans to replace Richmond Lions Manor (RLM), a residential care facility currently located in Steveston. The replacement of Richmond Lions Manor is an exciting development for residential care in Richmond, and we look forward to the opportunity to provide a newly renovated, updated facility and improved care environment to residents, staff and families.

In the fall of 2013, we will move to a more suitable facility, newly renovated and customized for the delivery of complex residential care. It will provide an interim home for RLM residents and an improved working environment for staff. The new location and enhanced care environment will be a significant improvement over the current, aging facility.

The selected building is located at 9020 Bridgeport Road and was formerly the Executive Inn. It had been renovated for the 2010 Olympics and will undergo additional, extensive renovations over the next year. Once completed, the facility will accommodate the same number of residents as RLM and provide the same services and care. Preliminary planning and design work has been completed for the interim site, incorporating features such as: a secure, landscaped outdoor garden; interior courtyard; lounge and activity areas on each unit, and improved accessibility for residents with mobility challenges. In the coming weeks, a more detailed design plan will be prepared and shared with residents, staff and families.

Once renovations are completed in the Fall of 2013, RLM residents and staff will move to the new location. We recognize that moving can be a stressful and challenging process. In order to ensure the smoothest transition possible, VCH will employ a specialized, experienced, healthcare moving company.

We are eager to proceed, however, there is some preliminary work that still needs to be done. A Notice of Intent (NOI) has been posted on BC Bid indicating that VCH intends to enter an agreement with the building owners. At the end of the NOI period, the developer will apply to the City of Richmond for a rezoning permit, which will involve discussion at the City’s Planning Committee and a Public Hearing.

As I said, this is an interim measure. We continue to work on a long-term solution for RLM, and will be completing a business case for a permanent replacement facility that will be submitted to the Ministry of Health for approval.
