The Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary received the Constellation Award at Volunteer Richmond’s “Volunteers are Stars Awards” on Monday night. The award honours volunteer groups for their service and contribution to the community.

The Richmond Hospital Auxiliary was created before Richmond Hospital opened its doors in 1962, and has been a valued partner for nearly 50 years. Today 400 Auxilians continue to play an important role in raising funds for patients and residents, as well as providing care and comfort to patients, residents and clients. In 2012, they contributed more than 42,000 volunteer hours.

Auxiliary volunteers manage a number of retail ventures including the Richmond Hospital Gift Shop, vendor tables, lottery booth, Thrift Shop in Steveston and the Tuck Shop at Minoru Residence. They music therapy in Psychiatry, Oncology Palliative Care, Richmond Lions Manor, Minoru Residence and Mental Health; recreational therapy at Richmond Lions Manor and Minoru Residence; and maintenance and management of the Minoru Residence bus. Earlier this year, they purchased a brand new bus for the residents of Richmond Lions Manor. Each year they also offer bursuries totalling $3,000 to three students who volunteer at VCH-Richmond and are enrolled in a health related field.

The Auxiliary was nominated by the Richmond Hospital Foundation. The Foundation also nominated The Ampri Group, a real estate developer and major supporter – who received the Shining Star award. That award honours businesses for their contribution to strengthen the community either through volunteer time/programs, expertise, or funding to non-profit groups.

Over the past four years, the Ampri Group has offered tremendous support to the Richmond Hospital Foundation, donating over $200,000 towards various projects and campaigns. This includes more than $60,000 to help with the Hospital’s Emergency Room expansion, in 2009, and over $100,000, in 2012, to purchase new equipment for stroke victims. The company has been a Diamond Sponsor of the Richmond Hospital Foundation’s signature fundraising event, the Starlight Gala, since 2010. In addition, Ampri Group CEO, Amit Sandhu, sits on three Foundation’s committees – Special Events, Starlight Gala, and Foundation’s Golf Tournament.

To see who else was nominated by the Foundation, check out the Foundation’s newspaper ad. For more information on award recipients, check out Volunteer Richmond’s award page.

This was the 12th anniversary of the Volunteers are Stars Awards—which were moved to April this year to coincide with National Volunteer Week. Ten awards in five different categories were handed out. The awards provide a great opportunity to come together to say thank you and recognize the wonderful contributions people make in the community, and to celebrate things that make the community great: dedication, passion, creativity and innovation.
