Capacity Management Suite (CMS) Update

Capacity Management Suite (CMS) went live at Richmond Hospital on April 26. We’re pleased to share that the new system is helping to improve how patients move through our hospital.

“With the help of CMS, numerous discharge barriers are being evaluated and corrective actions made,” said Rich Dillon, manager, Patient Flow & Care Transitions. “In one instance, a discharge barrier was reduced by 118 hours in one week, equivalent to saving five inpatient days.”

How it works

Discharging patients is a complicated process and delays can result for a variety of reasons: an exam hasn’t been ordered, lab results aren’t ready, or family hasn’t been notified for pick-up. The list goes on. CMS’ Discharge and Transfer Milestones feature (pictured above) allows staff to electronically track a patient’s discharge or transfer progress in an easy to follow bar graphic next to the patient’s bed number. At a glance, staff can see which targets have been met and which are still outstanding.

Decreasing unnecessary delays means patients are able to return home sooner, which is critical to the healing and recovery process.

We’re very happy with CMS thus far and look forward to exploring more opportunities for enhancing the flow of patients through our hospital.
