Second annual Community Health Fair a success

Manda Harmon and Greg Terpenning at the Community Health Fair held on August 29 at Oppenheimer Park.

On August 29, 2012, the Downtown Community Health Centre held its second annual Community Health Fair in Oppenheimer Park. The fair’s goals were to promote better health in the downtown eastside, and to raise the profile of the clinic among local residents.

  • Thirty-five people talked to DCHC’s educator about HEP C and their liver.
  • Forty-six people stopped by the COPD/Stop Smoking booth.
  • Seventy-five people had their blood sugar tested.
  • Eighty-six people had their blood pressure taken.
  • Two hundred and fifty people spun the wheel at the counselling booth.
  • The Health Support Team handed out 500 slices of watermelon.

The volunteers were great. The staff were great. The people in the park were great. DCHC’s partners – Portland, Vancouver Native Health, Carnegie and Options for Sexual Health – were all great. The weather was… well, at least it didn’t rain. The consensus among all parties was that the clinic should do this again next year.
