UBCH construction update: main entrance & driveway re-opened

Submitted by:  Mary Nieforth,  director, Cardiac Sciences and Special Projects, Vancouver Acute

Picture this no more: Koerner’s driveway and main front entrance are open for you and your patients.

Tunnel construction between UBC Hospital’s (UBCH) Koerner Pavilion and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (CBH) is now complete, and I’m happy to report that Koerner’s front entrance to the main lobby re-opened on September 17 as scheduled.  I can also confirm that:

  • The north parking lot at the front of Koerner is now open for inter-hospital shuttle and patient pick-up and drop-off.
  • Our new front driveway and accompanying sidewalk are complete and open to vehicles and pedestrians.
  • The additional Flag people assigned during tunnel construction are no longer in service.
  • Landscaping, planting, installing of parking signs and meters, and general clean-up will continue through to September 25.

Urgent Care Centre entrance scheduled for renos

The Urgent Care Centre (UCC) entrance will remain sealed until further notice, and all patients will continue to use the alternative entrances established during tunnel construction, the main entrance to the lobby of Koerner, and relocated UCC registration desk in the lobby, nearby Information and Admitting.

The front entrance to the Urgent Care Centre will undergo minor renovation and updating.  This work is anticipated to begin in the next several weeks. While this work is underway, patient traffic and access to the Urgent Care reception will continue to be provided in the main lobby temporary location.

As you may be aware, the gift shop has been temporarily functioning from the Purdy location. Work is underway to make minor revisions to relocate the gift shop within the main lobby area. We will keep you posted as this work develops.

I’d like to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation during construction. Sealing Koerner’s front entrances and driveway have allowed us to cut the tunnel’s construction time by half and limit disruption to the slower summer months. Your support has helped make this possible.
