Saying goodbye to Kathy Bawden

Kathy had 30 years of service under her belt when she retired this past June from Decision Support. Her zany humor and “tell it like it is” attitude will be greatly missed.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Kathy Bawden on September 21, 2012.

Kathy had 30 years of service under her belt when she retired this past June. During her time at VGH, Kathy worked in a number of roles, including Coordinator of Health Records and as a data analyst with Decision Support. Kathy also worked closely with Ortho Recon and Thoracic Surgery. One of Kathy’s biggest accomplishments was the implementation of the Ortho Recon database, from its design to submission to CIHI for the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry.

During her last ten years in Decision Support, Kathy would frequently say she was retiring “in two and a half years.” We didn’t quite believe that she would actually retire…ever!

Kathy enjoyed travelling, having taken trips to Thailand, Australia and loved Las Vegas. She was an active member of her Dragon Boat team, “Abreast in a Boat” and traveled abroad competing in many festivals. She was an avid reader, a huge fan of science fiction and was very interested in politics and history.

Kathy taught us that life is too short to worry about things that are out of our control. Her infectious laughter often emanated throughout our department. Kathy’s zany humor and “tell it like it is” attitude will be greatly missed by her friends and colleagues at VCH.

In lieu of a memorial service, a memory page at www.bccanceragency will be posted for Kathy shortly.  Decision Support will also enter a team in Kathy’s memory at the 2013 CIBC Run for the Cure and we welcome all staff to join us.  Anyone wishing more information on either of these initiatives please contact Susan Sirett (susan.sirett@vch.ca).
