2013 CANO/ACIO Oncology Nursing Day Flash Mob Dancers

On April 2, 2013, several dozen people came out to Flash Mob as a show of support for oncology nurses and in celebration of Canadian Oncology Nursing Day. This day is organized by the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO).

The group gathered at the main entrance of VGH and then paraded along 12th Avenue waving signs, pom-poms, and wearing orange and cranberry costumes. The Mob concluded with a group dance.

Event organizer Jennifer Stephens, a BMT nurse at VGH, noted that the turnout and enthusiasm were contagious. “We had so many people cheering and honking their horns for us, not to mention folks coming to watch the dance who wanted to share their stories about nurses they appreciated,” said Jennifer.

The Flash Mob brought together patients and families of cancer patients, as well as nurses from VGH, BC Cancer Agency (BCCA), The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and UBC.

Brenda Ross, a  research nurse coordinator with the CAMEO program at BCCA, said: “OND for me is about appreciating the diversity of oncology nursing, our contribution to patients, health care organizations and society. It is also a vehicle for networking, connecting with old friends, showing off what is great about our field of nursing, and having fun.”
