Caregiver Support program launches Take Care Handbook in Chinese!

Chinese-translation-ED

The recently launched Take Care: a handbook for family caregivers is now available in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and English. The Take Care handbook contains a wide variety of information relevant to family caregivers, including tips about coping with some of the challenges of caring for an aging or ill relative, sections dedicated to managing different care needs, medication use, and dementia, as well as information about VCH Home Health services. There is also a detailed community resource section in the back of the book.

To celebrate both BC Family Caregiver Week (May 4-10, 2013) and the official launching of the Chinese edition of the Take Care handbook, the VCH Caregiver Support Program partnered with SUCCESS this past May in hosting a series of community resource presentations aimed at helping family caregivers and service providers learn about community resources and programs which support Chinese caregivers.

Participating organizations included: Alzheimer Society of BC; Canadian Mental Health Association; SUCCESS Multi-Level Care Society; UBC Faculty of Medicine interCultural Online Health Network (iCON); University of Victoria Chinese Self-Management Programs; and VCH.

According to Lycia Rodrigues, VCH Community Developer for Seniors,

“This initiative underscored the importance of community development. It was a wonderful opportunity for community providers and Vancouver Coastal Health staff to build mutually beneficial relationships. Our efforts focused on building well-defined collaborative relationships with multicultural organizations and with neighbourhood houses.  These agencies hosted events, promoted our outreach initiative, and strengthened our collective resolve to engage seniors and share with them relevant information and resources on caregiver issues.  Owing in large part to our strong partnership with S.U.C.C.E.S.S., we were able to strengthen our outreach services to Chinese family caregivers.”
