Transition from Aramark to Crothall Healthcare

The transition from Aramark to Crothall Healthcare for the provision of environmental services (formerly housekeeping services) is well underway. All VCH and PHC sites will complete the transition by the end of September, with a phased rollout starting in August.

In anticipation of local transitions, we’ve received questions about what this transition means for the housekeeping staff we work with. Today, we answer the most frequently asked questions and provide important clarifications.

Today’s answered questions

Q. Why are some housekeepers receiving an offer and others aren’t?

A. Almost 800 housekeepers across VCH and PHC applied and participated in interviews, and the vast majority is receiving offers. For those who are not receiving an offer, there could be a number of reasons, including:

  • The person didn’t apply.
  • The person didn’t provide references, making him/her ineligible for hire.
  • The person didn’t meet other hiring criteria, including immunization requirements, a criminal-record check and an overall fit for Crothall and the change in job expectations, including new ways of working, and new standards and desired outcomes.

Q.Why is the probationary period with Crothall Healthcare six months?

A. The probationary period is set at six months to provide all housekeepers the time to adapt to new job expectations. In this way, Crothall ensures all of its new employees are treated equally and have the same opportunity to succeed and achieve new outcomes and standards. During this period, housekeepers will receive two wage increases – at three months and again at six months.

Q. Why will housekeepers earn less during the probationary period?

A. The probationary period and wage rate are set in the collective agreement. All collective agreements in the environmental services industry have a probationary period and wage rate, recognizing that the initial months of employment are a learning period when new employees are adjusting to new expectations, new processes and perhaps new equipment. During this period housekeepers will receive two wage increases – at three months and again at six months.

Q. Will housekeepers earn less after the probation period?

A. Crothall Healthcare offers a competitive compensation package for all hourly housekeeping positions across four wage classifications. While the hourly wage following the probation period will differ slightly, the total compensation value will increase as housekeepers’ share of benefit costs decrease.
