36 years “full of joy” — so long, Stanley Wong!

If you’ve visited VGH, chances are you’ve received a smile from Stanley Wong.

It might be because he’s a messenger at the hospital, but it’s more likely because, along with the mail, he delivers positivity and enthusiasm wherever he goes.

Stanley has been a friendly presence in the hospital for decades and after 36 years of dedication and outstanding service, he’s set to retire at the end of June. Describing his years at VGH as “full of joy”, Stanley started as a cook in the Centennial Pavilion main kitchen in 1980. Over the years he’s worked his way through housekeeping and electrical maintenance to his most recent role as a VGH messenger.

Known throughout the hospital for his generous spirit and helpful nature, Stanley says when he retires, it’s the people he’ll miss the most.

“I like to meet people and help out because I want to give them some comfort and make sure there’s someone to look after them if they’re lost,” Stanley says. “As a VGH staff member, I like to bring my best welcome and always ask if I can help people in the hospital.”

According to his supervisor, Craig Thompson, when he thinks of Stanley the theme song from CBC’s 1975 sitcom King of Kensington comes to mind: “When he walks down the street he smiles at everyone…”

Deanna Graham, messenger coordinator, couldn’t agree more about Stanley’s warm nature. “He’s a VGH ambassador,” she says. “Stanley is friendly, funny and compassionate and always ready and willing to go out of his way to help anyone in need.”

Stanley’s compassion extends outside his professional life to his volunteer pursuits. Volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross, S.U.C.C.E.S.S, Burnaby Emergency Social Service, the Salvation Army as well as the Tzu Chi Foundation and the VGH Burns and Plastic Team, Stanley generously gives his time to help others and support those in need.

Stanley on the harmonica

Staying true to his volunteering commitments after retirement, this December you can expect Stanley back at VGH playing the harmonica and bringing holiday cheer for Banfield Pavilion residents. Here’s a sneak peek!

It’s safe to say Stanley’s years of generosity and kindness have left an indelible mark on the hearts of VGH staff. Stanley, you’ll be missed!
