We heard you

“We can’t expect you to support clients and patients if you’re not feeling supported and valued yourself. It just doesn’t work.” That was one of president and CEO Mary Ackenhusen’s responses to a staff member who spoke up at the My VCH All-Staff Forum, held yesterday at Vancouver General Hospital.

Almost 600 staff and physicians—in person and by webcast—joined Mary and chief operating officers Vivian Eliopoulos and Laura Case to learn about the My VCH survey results and have a frank discussion about what can be done to improve the results over the coming year.

Staff learned that VCH’s overall organizational health score is 53, which means that 53% of staff “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that VCH is working well across nine outcome areas. Results were consistent across all communities of care, and across all job classifications.

“If I was to summarize what we heard, you are very motivated by the mission of health care, your patients, and the team you work with, but you do not feel aligned with where VCH is going and you don’t feel that leadership is hearing your voice,” said Mary.

What should we do next?

The discussion at the forum focused on three questions:

  • What’s the ONE THING that stood out for you in the My VCH survey results?
  • What would you act on FIRST? And why?
  • How would YOU engage staff as we move forward?

Until Dec. 13, you can also answer these questions online to give your feedback on our next steps.

Answer the quick survey to help shape our next steps!
