How long have you worked at VCH?
1 year.
Tell us what you do at VCH in one or two sentences:
I work in residential care as part of the allied health team. We work closely with care staff to make sure residents are transfered safely. We also investigate our falls management strategies, choose participants for walking and exercise groups, and get involved in meetings and projects for the benefit of residents and the whole facility.
What’s your favourite thing about your work?
I have a balance between ‘desk work’ and ‘resident work’. I get to move around the whole building but also get to sit at meetings and to do computer work. I can be alone or with people. This helps me achieve a balance to avoid burning out!
As a physio, I love to see people given an opportunity to walk or move if they haven’t for a while. It gives them hope and its good for their body and their mind!
How does your work contribute to the VCH True North goals?
We are continually striving to be a great workforce and to deliver great care. We are trying to be innovative in how we work with this population. We are vibrant and not stagnant!
One thing we might be surprised to learn about you:
People are sometimes surprised that I have 4 kids – I guess that is less common these days! But my grandma, a long time Richmond resident, had 12 kids so I figure I’ve only got a third of the family she had!
Three things you always have in your fridge:
Hemp hearts, dark chocolate, and stuff for smoothies.
Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by learning! So far this year I have learned at the Lean VSM/A3 course, I am on the Educator Pathway Level 2, and I took the e-course from UVic on Wound Management for Health Professionals. I am now using electrical stimulation to assist in wound care at Minoru Residence. I hope to learn more about research design through the Research Challenge coming up.
Most healthy habit:
Eat clean and move more – sit less.
Favourite vacation spot:
Far: Maui Close: Whistler Very close: my backyard
