Megan Bradfield

Job Title
Digital Communications Specialist

Department/Location
Communications & Public Affairs

How long have you worked at VCH?
Just over one month!

Tell us what you do at VCH in one or two sentences:
So far, with only one month under my belt, I’ve been learning the ropes of how to keep the VCH.ca website updated, striving to keep the @VCHhealthcare Twitter and Facebook accounts filled with engaging content, answering inquiries about building new websites, and trying to keep abreast of all my weekly department meetings. 🙂

What’s your favourite thing about your work?
It’s early to say, but the open-mindedness and creativity of my colleagues is pretty impressive. My job straddles creativity and technical systems, so I can apply a diverse set of skills. The view from my office window is pretty sweet as well.

How does your work contribute to the VCH True North goals?
I foresee my work in digital communications as directly supporting the promotion of better health for our communities through a people-first lens, as I try to share important and interesting content about living healthy and accessing public health services. I have a feeling I’ll be bringing some of aligned values of innovating for sustainability as I grow into my position!

One thing we might be surprised to learn about you:
I can play the double bass really well as I studied classical double bass performance at University.

Three things you always have in your fridge:
Read my “What’s in your fridge” interview in the Georgia Straight to get this answer! But here’s a hint: They’re all relatively yellow things.

Who or what inspires you?
Being in nature. My dad is a botanist, so I grew up hiking, learning about ecosystems and looking for plant biodiversity (nerd alert). Nature naturally de-stresses me and clears my mind so that inspiration can flow.

Most healthy habit:
Walking or cycling to work for the past decade. I’ve been lucky to live near all of my jobs, including VCH. I love listening to Podcasts like Freakonomics or CBC Ideas while I commute. Try it out, I bet you’ll like it!

Favourite vacation spot:
There are so many wonderful places to visit that are only a few hours drive away, so it’s tough to decide. I prefer avoiding airplanes, so a favourite desitnation is Port Townsend, Washington. To get there, you take a scenic 1.5 hour drive across the border, a short (inexpensive) ferry ride, and arrive in a picturesque Victorian town that has been preserved in it’s original state. There are various haunted boutique hotels to stay in, fantastic restaurant and pubs with excellent happy hours, and a historic movie theatre. Also, Fort Worden is an incredible State park located nearby to explore. Once a military base, the fort is filled with abandoned bunkers, tunnels, a miniature railway system, and grand officer’s quarters. If you’re a movie buff, you should know that An Officer and a Gentleman and The Ring were both filmed on location at Fort Worden.
