About 60 per cent of population health outcomes are attributed to the places we live (the physical / built environment) and social and economic determinants. VCH staff on the North Shore are raising awareness and support for building healthy neighbourhoods and communities that support healthy choices.

Engagement is the extent to which our staff are committed both emotionally and intellectually to excellence at VCH. Engagement is less about what we do and more about how we do it. This series celebrates the great work around safety and engagement on our front lines and is a result of the action plans prepared across VCH through the People First Safety and Engagement Survey.

What forms of prostate cancer require immediate treatment and which don’t?
A group of top scientists and clinicians at leading prostate cancer care and research centres in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec is being united through a $4-million Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) grant to help answer this question, as part of the TFRI Canadian Prostate Cancer Biomarker Network (CPCBN).

There was a lot of interest in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program referral process as a result of last week’s VCH news story. This week, we include some information about the VCH programs that are available.

Every June, we report our greenhouse gas emissions and carbon-reducing actions to BC’s Climate Action Secretariat for the Carbon Neutral Action Report (CNAR). The big news in this year’s Carbon Neutral Action Report (CNAR) is that Vancouver Coastal Health was carbon neutral in 2011, for the second year in a row. We achieved this by taking actions to reduce our green house gas emissions and by purchasing carbon offsets.

Drs. Martin Gleave and Colin Collins from the Vancouver Prostate Centre at VGHare part of this new pan-Canadian network of prostate cancer researchers. Over the next four years, the group will work to identify new ways to determine what forms of prostate cancer require immediate treatment and which don’t, as well as how to better predict which patients following surgery or radiation treatment are at risk of their cancer progressing.

During the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London this July, Dr. Babak Shadgan, clinical researcher with the orthopedic trauma division, urologic sciences department, and muscle biophysics at Vancouver Coastal Health, and sports physician, will be among the medical officials supporting the health and safety of the world’s top athletes.
