People First award winner: Chian-Li Hsu

We’re thrilled to profile Chian-Li Hsu. Chian-Li won the Award of Merit in the Volunteering Excellence category in this year’s People First Awards.

Nine years.


Tell us what you do at VCH in one or two sentences:
Offering assistance to the terminal patients and their families, hoping they can better cope in their predicaments.


What’s your favourite thing about your work?
Reminding a dying patient who had felt he was a total failure in life that any good deeds he had done, however small, count, thus, helping him gain peace with himself when he passed.

One thing we might be surprised to learn about you:
I had a book published a year ago entitled “To keep you company until you depart” (in Chinese) containing stories depicting experiences I encountered at PCU, VGH, and at Hospice Center, St. Mary’s Hospital, Taiwan, helping promote palliative care, and hoping these experiences serve as life lessons people can benefit from.


Three things you always have in your fridge:
Eggs, veggies, fruit.


Who or what inspires you?
The Dalai Lama, who once said, “If at the beginning and at the end of our lives we depend on other people’s kindness, why can’t we be kind to others in between?”


Most healthy habit:
Meditation and jogging.


Favourite vacation spot:
Sorrento, Italy.
