WATCH: Manjit and Kamal on their Best Work Buddy photo shoot!

As the Grand Prize winners of Vancouver’s Best Work Buddy (BWB) contest, Manjit Bains and Kamal Parmar, chose Coal Harbour for their photo shoot — and welcomed us to capture the occasion on video.

The VGH RNs exemplify how having a best friend at work enriches our work environment and helps us achieve our personal and shared goals. Manjit’s chipper enthusiasm complements Kamal’s calm disposition and clever humour. “She’s like the best sister ever,” says Manjit.

The pair met six years ago when Kamal arrived at VGH as an internationally trained nurse. Manjit helped Kamal adjust and settle in. Kamal inspired and supported Manjit to become an RN. Today, they work together as RNs on the ACE unit in Centennial Pavilion.

“You made us feel very special”

Manjit and Kamal didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits during their photo shoot. Umbrellas (and stethoscopes!) became fun props as they had their photos snapped on the sea wall, by the cruise ships and other tourist attractions.

“It was great day and you made us feel very special,” says Manjit. “We’ll frame these photos in our living room as a celebration of our friendship.”

More heartwarming BWB stories

The 10-week BWB contest invited all Vancouver physicians, staff and LMC colleagues to submit their photos and stories of friendship for a chance to win a weekly prize. All contestants were also entered into the draw for the Grand Prize: a one-hour professional photo shoot in Vancouver. Each week the responses were tremendous, including heartwarming stories of friendships formed from working together.

Altogether, almost 100 photos and stories were submitted, and you can read some of them in VCH News by clicking the links below:

* While VCH News was on two-week summer hiatus, we were unable to publish stories from weeks 4 and 5.
